Geht es euch auch so, dass ihr immer nach einem WARUM sucht? Warum ist dieser Winter so kalt und warum haben wir so viel Schnee? Einige haben ja die Theorie der mangelnden Sonnenaktivität und andere machen El Niño dafür verantwortlich. Ich fand den Artikel bei Focus-Online ganz interessant und hänge ihn mal dran. Wenn ich mir das so durchlese, haben wir eher noch das “gute” Wetter erwischt. Ich bin sehr froh, dass wir keine Dürrekatastrophe, keine Überschwemmungen und keine 1,40 m Schnee haben, aber auch ich kann den Frühling kaum noch erwarten.
Das Wetter spielt verrückt – und zwar weltweit. Der Osten der USA ächzt unter einer beispiellosen Schneedecke, in Deutschland setzt klirrende Dauerkälte den Menschen zu. In Brasilien bringen wüstenähnliche Rekordtemperaturen die Menschen ins Schwitzen, Ecuador leidet unter einer Dürre, in Mexiko treten die Flüsse über das Ufer. Ist das alles nur Zufall – oder gibt es doch einen erklärbaren Zusammenhang zwischen den Wetterkapriolen? Meteorologen haben eine weltumspannende Ursache ausgemacht: eine besonders ausgeprägte Variante des pazifischen Wetterphänomens El Niño im Zusammenspiel mit einem zähen Kältetief über dem Nordatlantik.
„In diesem Spiel gibt es mindestens zwei Spieler: El Niño und den Nordatlantik“, sagt der Wetterforscher Klaus Wolter von der University of Colorado in den USA. Das extreme Naturereignis El Niño entsteht alle paar Jahre über dem östlichen Pazifik, wenn die Wassertemperaturen ungewöhnlich steigen und die Wärme nach Osten strömt. Das warme Wasser ist der Nährboden, auf dem gewaltige Regen- und Sturmsysteme gedeihen. In Amerika führt El Niño oft zu extremen Niederschlägen, während in seinem Rücken – etwa in Australien – zyklische Trockenheit die Landschaft ausdörrt.
Wärmekarten der US-Behörde für Meeresforschung zeigen derzeit eine riesige rote Fläche im Pazifik zwischen Australien und Mittelamerika. Rot steht für warm. Hier befindet sich im Moment die Wetterküche der Welt. Über dem Nordatlantik hängt derweil die arktische Kälte ganz besonders zäh fest. Das Resultat sind Wetterkapriolen – etwa in Form gewaltiger Schneefälle wie nun im Osten der USA, wo schwer aufgeladene Regenwolken aus dem Westen auf die nordatlantische Eiseskälte prallen. „El Niño und der Nordatlantik sind es, die diese Winterstürme nach Nordamerika und Europa bringen“, sagt Wolter.
In Washington brachte der Winter bislang knapp 1,40 Meter Schnee – mehr als je zuvor seit Beginn der Wetteraufzeichungen 1884. Die Hauptstadt der Weltmacht USA liegt seit Tagen lahm, selbst den Verbrechern ist es zu kalt: Die Polizei registrierte einen deutlichen Rückgang von Straftaten. Ganz andere Probleme hat Südamerika: Im brasilianischen Rio de Janeiro stiegen die Temperaturen Mitte der Woche auf mehr als 46 Grad – und das kurz vor dem Karneval. Rios Temperaturen übertrafen sogar jene der Sahara.
Während in Rio die schlimmste Hitzewelle seit 50 Jahren wütet, stöhnt der nördlich angrenzende Bundesstaat São Paulo seit zwei Monaten unter Dauerregen. Mehr als 100 Menschen sind in Brasilien an Hitze und Fluten gestorben. Überhaupt zeichnet sich das weltweite Chaoswetter derzeit durch eine besonders ungleiche Verteilung von Niederschlägen aus: Halb Mexiko leidet unter Überschwemmungen, mehr als 40 Menschen starben. In Bolivien und Peru brachte der Dauerregen Berghänge ins Rutschen.
Der Äquatorbereich hingegen leidet derzeit nicht unter zu viel Wasser, sondern unter zu wenig davon. Ecuador stöhnt unter der schwersten Dürre seit 40 Jahren. In Venezuela wurde diese Woche der „Stromnotstand“ ausgerufen, weil der niedrige Pegelstand die Wasserkraftwerke trockensetzt. Viel weiter oben im Norden, in der sonst so niederschlagsreichen Winter-Olympiastadt Vancouver, mangelt es an Schnee.
